WPC Serene: Sunday in the bird park

When my mother was still with us, we used to spend many a serene Sunday at the Treehaven Waterfowl Trust Bird Park in Vereeniging, Gauteng. My mother, then 90+-years-old used to love walking in the park and feeding the birds. These photos were taken between 2010 and 2013.

Most of these birds have been placed in the park after they were rescued from adverse circumstances and nursed back to health or were bred in the park. They were very tame and only at feeding time did they become very animated.

πŸ™‚ Lovely photographs Hester, I guess in South Africa flamingos are classed as ‘natural wildlife’ whereas the last one I saw was in a zoo?

The lesser flamingoes are “near threatened” birds. They flourish in wetlands, but South Africa does not have many of those and currently a large part of the country is still suffering from a severe drought. However, they are wild birds, although a few may be found in birdparks such as this one. I know that the Kamfer Dam in the Northern Cape support a colony of Β±80,000 of these birds. Can you imagine that sight?

80, 000 must be quite a sight. We see on the News the effects of drought (global warming?) around the world and it’s nature that’s often affected :/

Thank you, when I uploaded it earlier this evening I was actually surprised with the quality of the video – this was taken with one of the first digital cameras we owned.

I’m exactly the same, all of my photos and older videos are taken with a cheap rather old camera. Just shows you don’t need to spend a fortune!

  5. Hester, om sulke herinneringe te mag hΓͺ, is so kosbaar! Nou verlang ek sommer weer na my ma.

  6. Wonderful, graceful birds, dear Hester.

  7. Looks like a lovely place to spend time.

  10. This is very serene indeed. A beautiful entry to the challenge.

  12. Very nice collection of images, looks like a nice spot to visit.
