My vreugdes en frustrasies

A - Z (2018)

#AtoZchallenge (2018) Y is for feeling Youthful

My theme for this challenge is “feelings” of a sexagenarian and the influence of social media.

English (Afrikaans below):

Youthful:  young or seeming young, girlish, boyish. Growing up in the 1960’s to early 70’s, during the years of “make love, not war”, meant that our lives were dominated by romance. The war was far away in countries unknown, but the music and the sentimental lyrics within reach.

The role of social media: With an ever-increasing number of senior citizens using social media these days, I cannot but fail but notice how our generation yearns for the “good old days’ and the “golden oldies”. What does surprise me, is that my children and their contemporaries also seem to enjoy the YouTube videos as much as I do. It just goes to show that love and romance are timeless. I hope you enjoy the songs that I selected and if you are my age, just close your eyes to experience the feeling of youthful love, optimism and lust for life again. Today’s emoji: 🤩

Afrikaans:

Jeugdig: jonk of skynbaar jonk, meisieagtig, seunsagtig.

Are You Lonesome Tonight (Elvis Presley) 1960

Are you lonesome tonight
Do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?
Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight?

I Can’t Stop Loving You (Ray Charles) 1962

I’ve made up my mind
To live in memory of the lonesome times
(I can’t stop wanting you)
It’s useless to say
So I’ll just live my life in dreams of yesterday

Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers) 1965

Oh, my love
My darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?

To Love Somebody (The Bee Gees) 1967

You don’t know what it’s like, baby
You don’t know what it’s like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

Nights in White Satin (The Moody Blues) 1967

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I’ve written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I’d always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can’t say any more
‘Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh how I love you

Cry to Me (The Staccatos) 1966 [This is a South African band who recorded the song that Solomon Burke made famous in 1961]

When your baby,
leaves you all alone
And nobody calls you on the phone
Don’t you feel like crying
Don’t you feel like crying
C’mon baby, cry to me.

You (Peter Maffay) 1970

Your eyes they tell me all the things you mean to say
I feel the same way as you
You are the first girl to count in my life
I, I live only for you

You alone are all I have in this world
You alone you, you’re my girl

I Just Can’t Help Believing (Elvis Presley) 1970
I just can’t help believin’
When she smiles up soft and gentle
With a trace of misty morning
And the promise of tomorrow in her eyes
I just can’t help believin’
When she’s lying close beside me
And my heart beats with the rhythm of her sighs
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day

Annie’s Song (John Denver) 1970

You fill up my senses
Like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime
Like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert
Like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses
Come fill me again

Dis so sweet, Hester.

I’m pleased I could introduce the song to you. We’ve had wonderful singers in South Africa and wonderful songs – also a lot of trash, but that is the case everywhere. This one holds wonderful memories for my generation.

  9. ……………..oh and they do say The Good Old Days is 50years ago whatever the generation!! 😀

Great choice of songs…thanks for sharing. And yes, at 70, I don’t feel much different than 40. LOL!

Nights in White Satin bring heimwee. 1967 was die jaar waarin my hele lewe verander het en my toekoms bepaal is.

  12. Dit is genieten Hester. Een en al herkenning.

Sal my hart dit hou of moet ek eers ‘n EKG laat doen?

      • So dankbaar daai tye is verby. Ek was altyd skaam in daardie afdeling.

Ons almal was.

A nice lineup of songs. I agree, that is why they are called ‘evergreen’. Made for a really nice evening listening.

  16. Wasn’t familiar with The Staccatos or Peter Maffay, but then I didn’t grow up in South Africa. Good choices!

  17. Short and sweet.. 🙂
