WPC Weathered: The effect of time and the elements

SS Nivonia, South African Whaler wrecked in July 1935 on the Kwazulu-Natal South Coast.

The Weekly Photo Challenge for this week is “Weathered – Show us the effect of time and the elements”.

The SS Nivonia, a whaler registered to a whaling company in South Africa, was built in 1912. In July 1935, the steam-driven vessel was wrecked on the rocks at Pumula Beach, close to the Intshambili (Injambili) River estuary. The equipment and a piece of the hull (see the triangular shape in the background) shown in the image below, weathered and beaten by the salt water and the wind, are all that is left of the whaler.

A whaler or whaling ship is designed for whaling, i.e the hunting of whales for their usable products like meat, oil and blubber.

In the early 1900s whaling was a popular occupation along this coast as whalers were able to follow the migrating whales to their feeding grounds in the Antarctic during summer, and their breeding grounds in Madagascar during winter.

Whaling was banned in South Africa in 1979.

  3. What a story this wreck has to tell – and how sad that we have to be so cautious about getting out and about!

  4. Daar is nou maar net iets baie ‘romanties’ aan so ñ ou wrakstuk. Soveel geskiedenis en stories wat daar lê.

Dis waar.

  5. Pragtig… soos gewoonlik
Miskien moet ek weer bietjie deelneem

  6. Pragtige skoon water, getypoele en daardie mooi golwe ! Geniet dit!
