WPC Reflecting

The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them – Thomas Merton

DSCN6734

This is a picture of my son and I, captured by my daughter during a recent visit to the Mzamba Fossils and Petrified Forest on the Wild Coast (I’ll elaborate on this adventure in my next post).

Our colorful reflections behind us remind me of our relationship spanning almost four decades: the ups and downs, the struggle for control within our relationship as well as the quest for inner control, the periods of uneasy peace, but also the close connection that still holds strong.

Our shadows stretching out in front of us attest to the fact that the future is unknown, but not to be feared.

Above all, when I look at this picture, I realise that my son has learned to fly solo and has become his own man, and that is how it should be.

💗 you and thank you for starring in my blog posts.

  1. Dis nou n pragtige refleksie.

    • Dankie.

  2. Hester, hierdie is ń baie, baie goeie post van jou. Jou opregtheid en insig, jou liefde vir jou mense, raak so aan my hart.

  4. Ai, so mooi… letterlik en figuurlik! Dankie… 😉

  5. Hi Hester – Your initial quotation reminded me of another quote “I’ve been trying to to change my husband’s habits for the past 30 years, but he’s no longer the man I married!”

    • Whaha, that’s a good one.

      • 🙂

      • The comment of colinandray reminded me me of a lesson on Homophones by my high school English teacher. This was her quirky illustration of her point:

The bridegroom is stood waiting for the bride, looking at things around him, thinking:
        “Aisle, altar, hymn.”
The bride enters the church, looking at the groom, thinking:
        “I’ll alter him!”

        • Hehe, I can just picture that in my mind. You know what? I could never understand the urge to change the person that you married. Why not be happy with the person you fell in love with? On the other hand, I suppose it’s possible that some unwanted characteristics in the partner surface only after the honeymoon.

  7. What a beautifully expressed, soul-touching piece! Your picture brings your words to life, and vice versa. It is indeed a tale of Faith, Hope and
    – above all – Love.

As the mum of three young boys, this is exactly what I needed to read today. Many many thanks for sharing something so personal and precious!

  9. So beautiful, Hester! Past, present and future expressed, with feet firmly planted in the present. Lovely! 😉 xoM

  10. A lovely reflection and a photo token with love.

  11. Wow wat ‘n pragtige foto … ek is skoon jaloers

  12. What a beautiful reflection. It’s even more beautiful due to connection between two of you. Lovely shot, Hester..

  13. Hierdie het my geraak Hester. Baie mooi

  14. Beautiful picture, wonderful (written) reflection…
